Fear the Alien

Finally got round to watching District 9 last week. I’ve been meaning to do this ever since the cinema release, and it’s been nagging away at me for a while. Despite the wait, I’m glad I did. It’s not perfect by any means – the key premise requires significant suspension of disbelief – but the invention, pace and originality more than make up for it. It’s actually got characters, for goodness sake. And it looks great. And it’s funny, and people blow up in amusing ways. All the bases covered, then.

As for me, I’m working on the redraft of a Space Wolves short story and enjoying basking in the shiny glow from my pristine copy of Sword of Justice. I’ll get tired of doing that soon, probably. But not yet.

It’s a weird thing, seeing a book that I finished the main writing phase of last year entering the last stages of production. Writing’s an odd career, in the the real work (for the author) ends months before the product actually hits the shelves. In this case it’s even odder, as I’ve actually finished the first draft of its sequel already. This is currently with the editors at BL, and as ever I’m sitting with sweaty palms, waiting for the feedback. It’s a horrible time, and the small hours of the night are filled with the thought that there’s a gaping plot hole, or a major theme doesn’t work, or it needs to be cut by 20,000 words. Only time will tell…

Stephen Hawking aliens theory doesn’t scare planet hunters

British scientist Stephen Hawking says that aliens might ‘conquer and colonize’ Earth. His colleagues disagree.
