The wolves are coming…

Just back from BL Live – an eight-hour round trip from Bristol to Nottingham on a train that smelled like a sewer. Worth it, though, to catch up with a few familiar faces from Games Day and meet some new ones. Several people had turned up with copies of Iron Company for me to scrawl over. What made this particularly enjoyable was the fact that many had read it and liked it enough to get it signed. Of course, getting positive feedback is always nice and I’m never going to complain about it, but having someone say how much they enjoyed a book to your face is particularly important and encouraging. Negative reviews are inevitable and necessary – they’re much more helpful in becoming a better writer – but writing is a solitary business and you need to get a positive comment from time to time to reassure you that what you’re doing is on the right track. So to everyone who dropped by to have a chat, it was much appreciated.

Since getting back, I’ve returned to the final stages of the first draft of Sword of Vengeance. After that, there’s a little matter of a short story I’ve been working on for a while. I’m not feeling quite so cagey about it since it went to a second draft (shifting universes is a tricky business), but basically it involves a bunch of shaggy-haired, foul-mouthed, unwashed and uncouth savages with a basic fear of technology and a chronic set of attitude issues. First Great Western? No, their distant cousins on Fenris, the Space Wolves. Hopefully the short, currently titled Runes, will see the light in an upcoming anthology, so watch this space…

Schaf: Yeah, good to see you too. I’ll try and get the word out early if there’s any signing going on in the South West. Hope you like D&D, and cheers for the comments on Masters of Magic!

I swear I done this yesterday? But for some reason it’s not showing it today. So I’ll try again, sorry if this is a repeat…

Hi Chris, I was one of the people you met for the first time that enjoyed Iron Company, you described Warhammer as drug and you were correct, after Saturdays little gathering I’m now addicted to Warhammer the game again, but what can you do? I just wanted to thank you again for signing my books, and the short chat was a pleasure.
Not really a fan of Space Wolfs, but I’m sure there is always room for hairy blokes.
    Thanks Mark

Ah yes, you did. That’ll be me, being lazy and incompetent about checking in my comments. Damn you, WordPress, and your ways.

Cheers for the comments, Mark, and very good to meet you. Work on the Wolves is in its early phases, and I’m not going to say anything more about them now in case I start annoying my editors. Assuming all goes well, I’m hoping to do more Fantasy in the future – I’ll try and blog about it a bit more regularly here as stuff comes up…

A pleasure to catch up, Narry. And many, many congratulations on your first short story in D&D. Hope it leads to many more.
